Second Suspect Arrested in Connection with Shooting of Off-Duty Border Protection Officer in NYC

An off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer who was shot in the face during a botched robbery in Fort Washington Park on Saturday is now recovering.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed in a Monday morning news conference that a second suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting near the George Washington Bridge.

The two suspects, identified as Christhian Aybar-Berroa and Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, are both undocumented immigrants from the Dominican Republic, according to officials.

Mayor Eric Adams stated that both suspects have extensive criminal records and should have been deported months ago.

Surveillance video released by the Department of Homeland Security shows the two men on a moped approaching the 42-year-old officer and his female companion. The officer was shot in the face and arm but managed to return fire with his service weapon, injuring the gunman in the leg.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, both suspects entered the U.S. illegally during the Biden administration. Federal charges are anticipated.
